Actra PERFORMERS magazine
Volume 23 ISSUE 2 Fall 2014
The above Actra Article just skims Fred's career. Here is a note from him with a chronological listing of his
working life in radio:
I began Sept 20 1960 at CJOY in Guelph.
By the summer of 1961 I was CHML---(not CHMI)
After a brief three or four month stint at CHOW in Welland I went back CHML in Hamilton.
In Dec 1963 I started at CKFM in the old Bloor Street studios where CFRB was
also situated.
Next, around 1965, I moved on to CHFI and then CKEY. Two years later I was
back to CKFM which by now waslocated at Yonge and St. Clair. I quit several
times and finally left in 1976.
Joined the CBC as a contract news announcer replacing the highly regarded Earl Cameron
when he moved to TV. Substituted for Bruce Smith
on the four to six show when he retired.
Sheila Rogers eventually became the new host.
I have a vague recollection of doing an early evening program which eventually was taken
over by Vicki Gabereau.
Back to CKFM in 1979-80. In1985 or 86, Ralph Lucas hired me for weekend swing
and the Owls Nest
and that lasted until September, 1993.
Overall my radio career spanned thirty three years.
